The Magellanic Stream

The sky would look more interesting if we could see the neutral hydrogen... here's the Magellanic Stream, which would cover 100-200 degrees. More to come up when I clean up some artifacts. In the data, that is, not some old pots I dug up.

This would be fun to show with a landscape in the foreground to show just how friggin' enormous it would look.

  2. Rhys, I'm game to compose an image with this backdrop - credit to you for the concept and background art, would there be a larger image available? Something in the realm of 3500x3500 (not required to actually be square) or larger would do nicely.

Right off I see a star ship in planetary orbit around some distant exo-world or perhaps an alien industrial cityscape.

  3. Sure, go ahead. Not sure how far I can push the resolution - the optical image looks fine at 3.5k, but the HI data is only 720x361, so it looks very pixelated at 3.5k (even with mipmapping). I'll see what I can do to fake higher resolution.

  4. Thanks Rhys, a higher resolution will give the work a bigger punch in terms of eye-candy. You can e-mail the image to the address of our last correspondence. Thanks!
